June landslides campaign – TCN sampling from scarps and reference dendro
In the first half of June the teams of UB and WUT met at the landslides investigation area for a field campaign dedicated to long-term and recent geochronology (WP2, Task 2.2 Geochronology of landforms and dynamics reconstruction). One of the targets was to collect rock samples for absolute age dating of landslides depletion (scarps) areas by TCN (terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides). This would allow identify the formation period of such massive landslides and potentially its correlation with climatic or non-climatic triggers. For this purpose, we started with four landslides: Păltineni1 (on the right side of Buzău River), Balta and Păltiniș (on the left and right side of Bâsca Rozilei River) and Muntele Curselor (upper stream, on Bâsca Mare River). 13 samples were totally collected, and will further be processed in the laboratory by P3. The second target of the campaign was to sample visibly old trees from landslides bodies for dendrochronology analyses with the purpose of identifying the timing of forest formation and the climatic conditions of trees evolution. This would give a comprehensive image on the dynamics of the landslides during the last centuries. WUT team sampled for start 50 trees from a reference area on Balta landslide, and is preparing a second campaign with supplementary equipment that will allow them to drill into the beech trees with diameters of up to 5 meters.
During our campaign, a new landslide produced in the area, which gave us the opportunity to explore the present conditions of landslides occurrence in the study site, and also the fresh morphology of such landforms. Many thanks to Marian Mandici, Sabina Calisevici and Nely for their precious help in the field and to Ana and Ema for the lovely company!
