BTS campaigns in Retezat and Parâng Mountains – March 2022
Between March 13 and 24, 2022, the WUT team managed to perform out BTS campaigns in Retezat and Parâng Mountains.
In the Retezat Mountains, BTS measurements were made on four rock glaciers (Galeșul, Valea Rea, Pietricelele and Pietrele) and in the Parâng Mountains on three rock glaciers (Roșiile I, Roșiile II and Geamănarea).
In the two field campaigns approximately 240 BTS points were measured, successfully covering the target areas. The values recorded were between 0.3 and -12°C. The depth of the snow layer in the measured points was between 80 – 300 cm.
In the case of all the seven rock glaciers, the BTS values showed important variations on their entire surface, however, the values specific to the areas characterized by the presence of permafrost predominated.
The purpose was to improve the density of BTS points targeting areas with possible permafrost. The results of BTS measurements help to interpret the characteristics of permafrost as well as a local conditions that favor its preservation.
We most appreciate the involvement and effort of our volunteer students Iosif and Gabriela.
