Field campaign Dobrogea and Danube Delta

Between 5 and 23 March 2022, a field campaign was conducted in in Central and South Dobrogea and in the Danube Delta. The first objective of this campaign was the identification of potential deep-drilling points, that are scheduled in the following weeks. Thus, the optimal land for drilling in the vicinity of Mangalia and Eforie Nord resorts was inspected, as well as the areas of the Lower Danube Floodplain, near Jijila and Văcăreni localities.

The second part of the campaign took place in the Danube Delta and aimed to collect sediments from lakes and secondary levees. Cores of 1 meter-length were sampled using a ‘van Beeker’ system. Sediments samples were taken at an equidistance of one centimeter from the first 30 cm of each core, and at each 2 cm in the remaining of the core. The sampling action took place at the Sfântu Gheorghe Marine and Fluvial Research Station. Several supplementary profiles for SLIP (Sea Level Index Point) determination were also sampled on Sfântu Gheorghe beach and a series of DGPS profiles were performed for the ongoing monitoring of the dynamics of the beach-dune system North of the Sfântu Gheorghe mouth. These activities contribute to Objective 2 of the project (Recent to present response of landforms and geo-hazards to climate trends and increasing variability), and the results are to be used for modeling the sedimentation process in the Danube Delta during the last 100 years.
